Below are a list of recommendations for teachers to promote global citizenship values:
Model Global Citizenship Values in Your Behaviour
Consistently demonstrate fairness, equality, and inclusion.
Ensure all students feel socially included and respected.
Avoid favouritism; treat all students equitably to reinforce the value of equality.
Align Your Actions with the Values You Promote
Do not simply talk about values like fairness and inclusion—live them.
Inconsistencies between stated values and behaviour (e.g., favouring certain students) undermine students’ adoption of those values.
Use the Schwartz Value Circle to Guide Teaching
Focus on promoting universalism values (e.g., helping the weak, protecting the environment), which are the basis of global citizenship.
Encourage self-direction and benevolence, which are neighbouring values and support global citizenship.
Avoid promoting power values (e.g., excessive competitiveness), which contradict global citizenship goals.
Design Classroom Procedures That Express Global Citizenship Values
Create classroom rules and norms that promote fairness, inclusivity, and collaboration.
Facilitate student participation and responsibility in creating a respectful and just classroom environment.
Provide Opportunities for Value-Expressive Behaviour
Incorporate activities like volunteering, environmental projects, or social action into your curriculum.
These behaviours help students internalise global citizenship values through active participation.
Promote Personal Excellence Rather Than Competition
Encourage self-improvement and creativity (self-direction) over being “better than others.”
Avoid an overemphasis on winning or outperforming peers, which may undermine empathy and cooperation.
Support Participation in International Mobility Programmes (When Possible)
Advocate for and support students’ participation in long-term (preferably 1-year) study-abroad programmes.
These experiences significantly increase global citizenship behaviours, especially when students feel supported and engage in community activities.
Foster Supportive Relationships During Intercultural Experiences
If involved in student exchange or mobility programmes, ensure students feel emotionally supported and have access to community engagement.
These factors help sustain or strengthen global citizenship values during time abroad.
Encourage Reflection on Intercultural Experiences
Facilitate discussions or assignments that help students process and articulate what they learn from intercultural encounters or mobility experiences.
This supports long-term integration of global citizenship behaviours.
