Motivations’ speed-dating

AUDIENCE

pupils from 14 to 18

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

To put into words one’s own motivations to go abroad

To raise about diversity of motivations to go abroad

TIME

45 minutes to 1 hour

NECESSARY MATERIALS

a bell

paperboard and markers

STEP-BY-STEP DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY

Set the room with a line of chairs facing each other, so that students can be in pairs.

For 1 minute, both students of each pair share and explain 1 motivation. Every minute, the facilitator rings the bell so that the students of the right line move towards the right. Again, students have 1 minute to share 1 motivation that has to be different every time. They can be inspired by each other but cannot repeat a motivation that they have already shared. You can do this 5 to 8 times.

Ask the students to gather in circle and start brainstorming about motivations that were shared. Write them down on a paperboard. You can try to sort it out with different categories (holidays, learn, discover etc.). You can have a discussion with the students. You should point out that the motivations within a group are very diverse but they are also all legitimate. Especially since motivations are the driving force behind the project.
