2 different mono-national groups of pupils
1 hour
Split the pupils into two mono-national groups
Each group draws on a large sheet of paper the shape of one of the member of the group and cut it out in two pieces in length
The pupils write down on the left part what is, from their point of view, typical of their own culture and on the right part, what is typical of the culture of the other group.
The pieces are exchanged between the groups in such a way as to shape two mono-national shapes, with the stereotypes each group has about its own culture and the stereotypes the other group has.
The prejudices and stereotypes are discussed. The objective of the activity is not to fight against nor to reinforce the stereotypes, but to make the pupils aware of different opinions and to help them build their own opinion. It will help them to put things into perspective about the other culture and about their own culture.
It is highly recommended for the facilitators to be acquainted with the game and have a previous experience as participants, as the activity may arise strong emotional reactions from the group.
